Doesn't the need for this file make BoxCryptor useless as means to back up data? Let's say my hard drive explodes tomorrow, .encfs6.xml along with it. I can redownload Dropbox to access most of my files, but the encrypted ones are now permanently inaccessible?

Because of your folder, which contains the BoxCryptor encrypted data, is contained in your Dropbox folder no data is lost. The .encfs6.xml file is also synchronized to Dropbox so you don't have to worry if your hard drive beaks. If you have redownloaded your Dropbox you just have to choose your old BoxCryptor folder and type in your password. Then your encrypted files are again accessible.

In addition I want to mention that it is no problem that the .encfs6.xml file gets synchronized because all the information in it is protected by your BoxCryptor password. For more information click here.

Thanks. I actually quite like BoxCryptor after using it this afternoon.

One more question - does BoxCryptor ever change the contents of .encfs6.xml? I would like to make multiple copies of this file just in case, but this would only really work if the contents of the file are never changed.

You can (and should) definitely make backups of the .encfs6.xml file as it contains the (secured) encryption key and the loss of this file would result in not being able to decrypt the files again.

The contents are only changed in the case that you change the password, because then the encryption key has to be secured by the new password.

Reading the description "How does BoxCryptor encrypt files?" makes me wonder: security is based only on the strength of the password since the volume key is stored in the same place where the encrypted data is stored (in my oppinion it´s "snake oil" to encrypt the volume key with some master key which it self is protected by the passphrase that can be bruteforced).

Sure... makes life easier when you do not want to care about key management... but you should consider this when using tools like this.
