I am using Boxcryptor to access and encrypted folder on an XP pro pc which is used as a simple server. I normally work on a windows 7 pc with BC defaulting to a network drive. This has worked well since version 1.3, although I have noticed the occasional “File not saved” message when saving excel files.
Last Friday I set up access from my XP pro laptop. All seemed to work fine.
However when I turned it back on Tuesday I got “File not saved” every time I tried to save an excel file.
The problem seems very erratic in. Changing something (eg installing the MS updates ) appears to fix the problem but it will returned when the system was reset. Sometimes one file in a folder will save ok and another wont.
There was no problem saving files to the network folder directly.
Word also would not save, but gave a slightly different message saying the file was no longer available or there were permission problems. Interestingly word would open a 2nd copy of this apparently none exiting file. ( It also did not report that the file was already open)
In desperation I ticked the Mount as fixed Drive option and files started to save ok even after a restart.
I think the network drive created by Boxcryptor with Mount as fixed Drive option unticked, is not a completely true network drive.
Although it appears in the network drive section of My computer on both XP and W7, both system also show it the defag tool drive list. No other network drive appears in this list.
I use AnVir Task Manager Free which give W7 style Icons to the drives in XP. It give the BC drive a hard drive icon.
I think Excel thinks the BC drive is a hard drive and talks to it as if it is, but BC responds as a network drive and excel does not like this.
I can obviously carry on with the mount as fixed drive option, but I am concerned that this will create a lot of extra network traffic making BC slower.
PS the Manual needs to be updated as you can now change the name of a drive with an network source folder.
