BoxCryptor for Mac OS X Beta

I'm very happy to write this post because the first public beta of BoxCryptor for Mac OS X is available now and that BoxCryptor's easy-to-use experience is now also available for Mac OS X users. Please consider the following before downloading and installing BoxCryptor for Mac OS X:

- This is an early beta version, so please use it with caution.
- Only one BoxCryptor volume is supported right now.
- During the beta, BoxCryptor for Mac OS X is completely free.
- This version expires on 06/30/2012 and will stop working after this date.
- This version is Lion-only. Support for older Mac OS X versions will come soon.

Some additional information for our advanced users:

As you might know, we have already provided a solution for Mac OS X with our EncFS installer. Although this installer made it much easier to use encryption software on Mac OS X, we have received a lot feedback that its usage and configuration through Macfusion was still too complicated. In this first version on our way to a native BoxCryptor for Mac OS X application, we still rely on the great EncFS project for the actual encryption and decryption of files - and we focused on bringing the easy-to-use experience from Windows also to Mac OS X by developing our own user interface on top of it.

This BoxCryptor for Mac OS X package contains the following software:
- OSXFUSE 2.3.9
- EncFS 1.7.4
- BoxCryptor 0.9

Hello and a question. There are two files sitting in my encrypted folder: .apdisk and .DS_Store. What are they and do I need them in there? I also see .encfs6.xml but this one is expected. So what are the other two files? Thank you for clarifying.

Anyone home? Is there a command to banish these two files for good? Any harm in doing so? Or will banishing them break the application? Thank you for letting me and others know.

I'll try to answer your questions:

1) As this is a beta version, we don't want anybody to use it - let's say in 1 year when a stable version has been released months before. We will have a new release available until this version expires, so you will be able to use BoxCryptor for Mac OS X of course also after that date.

2) .apdisk and .DS_Store are files created by Mac OS X and have nothing to do with BoxCryptor. So you can delete them without breaking BoxCryptor. However, as they are created by the operating system, I would not delete them and Mac OS X will always recreate those files.

I tried your beta and it failed like your free encfs solution in one point: it doesn't support UTF-8(-MAC) filenames. The files with filenames containing special German or French characters are proper handled via your Windows solution, but don't show up or can't be handled by Mac. This is no solution, I would pay for.

I was using EncFS. I updated to OS X 10.7.4 just now and it stopped working.
Has this been reported by others?

I tried your OS X beta of boxcryptor and that is working fine with 10.7.4.

I did have other mounts (e.g. sshfs ones through macfusion). Any hints how I get them back?

Just tried on my MacBook Pro with 10.7.4 and all was still OK with EncFS, so likely a problem with my Mac mini set up.

Seems fine on OS X 10.7.4. BUT I tried a test file and the BoxCryptor iOS app crashed when I tried to delete it. Happened several times. I'll do a reboot and try again.
Update: after a hard reset of the device (iPhone 4), threw in another test file into the BoxCryptor/EncFS encrypted folder on Mac and while then visible in BoxCryptor iOS, when trying to delete the file, the iOS app crashes.

Is it safe to install the beta of boxcryptor for Mac when one is using EncFS for other file systems?

Hi Ian,

if you have already installed EncFS, you can choose to only install the BoxCryptor-GUI. By default, the BoxCryptor installer installs OSXFuse, EncFS and the BoxCryptor GUI. By choosing "Customize" in the installer, you can deselect OSXFuse and EncFS.

Then it's totally safe to install the BoxCryptor for Mac OS X Beta.

I just re-downloaded MacFusion and all is well now.
I can use it to mount SSHFS systems and the Boxcryptor beta with my encrypted Dropbox folder.

This is my first Mac. I can't believe that it took me so long to change to Mac at the beginning I was hesitant to spend so much in it but this computer worth's every dollar that i paid for. All the programs run super fast and the graphics are the best. I definitely recommend switch to Mac..
