Problems saving MS office files.

Is anyone else having this problem?
My encrypted folder is on an XP PC being used as an “unofficial server” in a peer to peer network. With BC on the local pc I can read and write most files, but when I try to save an excel file I get a “File not saved” message. I have checked all permissions etc and can save a file to sever folder directly.
I am curious to know if this is something odd about my network

To create the debug file do the following:
1) Quit BoxCryptor
2) Type into the Windows startmenu "boxcryptor.exe /debug"
3) Reproduce the error
4) Quit BoxCryptor
5) The "BoxCryptor.log" is located on your desktop

PS My network is a simple peer to peer one with the "severe" runing xp pro.
I have a couple XP PC plus 1 W7. I have tried with and without Simple file sharing on the XP sever. The W7 will sometime save the file (often at the 2nd attempt) The XP pc almost aways will not.

I have the same experience.

We use Boxcryptor (Unlimited Business Team License) in GoogleDrive on Vista and Win7.
We open a Word or Excel file <u>that is located in the BoxCryptor drive</u> and modify the file.
On both the Vista and Win7 machine, when trying to use WOrd or Excel's "Save as", on several occasions the file can not be saved to a location in the Boxcryptor-drive.
(I did not check other file-locking applications yet) .
A "Save as" to a location <u>outside the BoxCryptor drive</u>
(I checked to outside the GoogleDrive) works without problems.

The BoxCryptor log-file does not show any abnormalities in case of said "Save as" problems.

I tried the suggestion found elsewhere in this forum to change the way the BoxCryptor drive is mounted from "virtual" to "fixed", but to no avail.

Surprizingly, some Word or Excel-files in the BoxCryptor drive never seem to show the problem, others files always.
All GMail accounts involved in the GoogleDrive have at least RW rights, but GD ownership of the files can vary. I am trying to find a link between GD(non-)ownership and the "Save as" failure ...

I did not have an opportunity yet to check this in a BoxCryptor drive outside a GoogleDrive folder.

Any advice is appreciated.

Hi Plerry.

I think you may have a different problem to mine as I do not have file name encrypted.
My problem is that the source files are on network drive not a local had drive.
I have played with google drive and not had any problem saving office files, but it is part of a local drive and i was not encrypting file names.

Everybody who experiences this problem, please try if the beta v1.4 resolves it. You can find it here:

If it does not solve it, we seem to have to dig deeper. The problem is, that we cannot reproduce the problem on our regular and and only a small subset of users seems to be affected. Bug hunting such problems is not too easy. So, if you experience this problem, please do the following:

1) Create a debug log (see above) and submit it to us either here or via Helpdesk.
2) If possible, also create a Process Monitor Log file and submit it to us:
2.1) The BoxCryptor Drive has to be mounted for all users (see Advanced Options)
2.2) Download Process Monitor here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
2.3) Start Process Monitor and start capturing events
2.4) Try to save a file in the BoxCryptor Drive
2.5) Stop capturing events and save the events in a Native Process Monitor Format (PML)
2.6) Tell us which application and version you tried (e.g. Word 2007) and which file you wanted to save (X:\Test.docx)

This might give us some insight in what's going wrong. Best would be if the BoxCryptor log and the Process Monitor log would be taken at the same time.

Hi Robert,

I e-mailed a process log from my Windows 7 machine yesterday. I hope you got it as it was 37 MB.

As I happened to be playing with Windows 8 I thought I would try BoxCryptor on it.

It seems that the problems saving office files to encrypted folders on network drives is independent of the version of Windows on the remote PC as mounting the encrypted folder on the W8 machine produced the same problems as on W7 and XP.
BoxCryptor running on Windows 8 seems to behave in the same way with the same error message is Windows 7.
I was also playing with a symbolic link to a remote drive and thought it might be interesting to mount the encrypted folder via a symbolic link. BoxCryptor was able to save files without any problem. This is probably not surprising as it saw the folder on the remote PC as a local file due to the link, and set itself up in the local drive mode. I think this is a fairly strong indication that the problem lies in BoxCryptor's implementation of the network drive.
I am not sure how Windows manages symbolic links but if it realises they are remote and minimises file access accordingly this might be a more elegant work around than simply forcing BoxCryptor to run at a fixed drive, though setting up symbolic links is not for the fainthearted.

PS I tried to force BC with a local folder to mount as a non fixed drive but the nonFixed command line option did not seem to work. has it been disabled in the beta version.
