BoxCryptor on OS X does not decrypt files

Hi,

I'm running OS X mountain lion. I have boxcryptor set up with Skydrive. It works great on windows 7. However on OS X I keep getting message when I try to open file through Finder - "<filename.ext>" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash.

I'm guessing it's not decrypting the files. Weird part is I can see the file in quicklook but when I double click the files it throws above error message.

does this happen with all filetypes or only with specific ones? Can you maybe give me an example file type where you experience this problem?

Same issue here. I checked .pdf (doesn't work), regexrx and .doc (both worked). Copying the pdf into a local drive and open it from the local location works as well.

The BoxCryptor Volumes resides on a Google Drive.

On my iMac (using Lion instead) I can still open the .pdf metioned above. It seems to be an issue with Mountain Lion and BoxCryptor.

Thanks for this great information. I was assuming that an extended attribute could cause the trouble. Do you have files left with the quarantine attribute which can't open? If so, the value of the attribute would be interesting. You can print it with the following command:

$ xattr -p com.apple.quarantine <file>

Trying to open this file into TextWrangler produces the well known message about a corrupted file. I found some reports about NFS files having the same issue using Mountain Lion.

Additionally I tried to reproduce this adding new files using my iMac (Lion), but maybe it's just an issue right after the upgrade to mountain lion checking all files under suspicion.

Download any PDF file using Chrome or Safari directly into the mounted BoxCryptor volume.

Checked the system log messages. Double click an affected file the dialog appears and this line will be logged:

Closing the dialog this line appears:

Thank you very much for your investigations pingus! You really tracked down the problem and helped us a lot! Especially the information how to reproduce the problem was great!

The only real solution right now is to remove the com.apple.quarantine extended attribute from all files in the BoxCryptor Folder. You could also disable Gatekeeper, but I don't think this is something many Mountain Lion users would like to do.

We've just released a new version of BoxCryptor for Mac OS X. In order to better handle that problem we added a "Fix 'damaged' files" feature which removes the com.apple.quarantine extended attribute from all files in the BoxCryptor Folder. To use the feature:

1) Switch to Advanced Mode
2) Right-click on the BoxCryptor Volume
3) Choose "Fix 'damaged' files"
