BoxCryptor v1.5 Beta for Windows 8

Hi everybody,

We're very proud to announce the first beta release for the upcoming v1.5 of BoxCryptor for Windows.
This revision has a short changelog, as it brings mainly two additions. But this doesn't mean it's not worth checking out the new version. In contrast: Both are highly requested from you, our users.

First: Windows 8 support. We support the Windows 8 Thumbnail-View, the integrated PDF-Viewer and various other new Windows features.

Second: Multi-Language. Currently BoxCryptor v1.5-Beta is available in the following languages: English, German, Spanish and Italian. BoxCryptor will detect the language of your Operating System and apply the same language, if available. If you're not happy with that, you can change this in the Advanced Settings.

IMPORTANT: This is a tested version, but not a stable release. Make sure to make a backup of your data and your configuration file before upgrading to it.

As Windows 8 is very new platform, it would be great if you could try the new version and we would be very, very happy to hear your feedback!

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for the new version! From now it works great with dropbox on Windows 8, the Skydrive option is greyed out, so i wasn't able to get it work with Skydrive.

I will let you now if i get some problems or issues.

p.s. Is there any timeline for the Skydrive option within the Boxcryptor iOS app?

Hi Stefan,

I was hoping you could help me out with a problem I'm having after the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Ever since the upgrade I've not been able to access any of the encrypted folders. The mapped drives don't appear even though the application says the folders are mounted. When I try to launch the folders from Boxcryptor, I get the message "Location is not available". I'd appreciate your help in resolving this.

My observation on (XP SP3) is that changing the language from DE to EN (here : on a system with German locale) , quit the program (also after reboot), doesn't work - italian and spanish do work.

Crashes during installation. The last thing it reads is "CBFS: Not installed" (iirc) before the crash. Tried deinstallations/reinstallations, nothing works. If i reboot after the failed install, boxcryptor will be there and if I attempt to run it and then mount a drive it tells me CBFS isn't installed.

Can you please post the install.log here? You can find it in the installation directory of BoxCryptor (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\BoxCryptor). Thanks!

@snaphat - had a similar experience w/ upgrade from 1.4 : deinstallion and manual deletion of everything (this removes your settings though) in c:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Local Settings\Application Data\Secomba_GmbH\
and
c:\Program Files\BoxCryptor\
helped. Don't tried an install on a clean system.

Side note : it's a bit annoying that the Dokan uninstall selection dialog always opens internet explorer.

Robert: There was no install.log. I did a bit of investigation and found the problem was an attempt to read an incorrect memory address (mov [%eax], %ebp where %eax=0x02 and %ebp=0x00) in cbfsinst.dll. I noticed that the location of the loaded dll was the same directory as the boxcryptor installer. I further noticed that the particular dll doesn't appear to be distributed with 1.5, but is with 1.4 (Using 7-zip to extract). Removing the dll from the directory where the installer resides and then installing fixes the problem.

Looks like I extracted the 1.4 boxcryptor installer using 7-zip into my downloads directory and the 1.5 installer is attempting to use the cbfsinst.dll from it and that is causing the problem. I doubt the intended behavior is for it to use existing *.dll files during installation (it could also be used as an attack vector).

As an update, I just installed boxcryptor 1.5 on another PC. It had the same crash problem on this PC during the first attempted install. I took dump of the install. Looking at the dump, it used a version of cbfsinst.dll located in my AppData\Local\Temp\. The particular version was 3.2.115.246 (from boxcryptor 1.4). So it is definitely an issue with the installer using previous versions of cbfsinst.dll that are located elsewhere from the installer.

I honestly, don't believe it is useful beyond looking at loaded modules, but here is the dump file from VS: https://www.dropbox.com/s/g9gza5p65pba0jo/BoxCryptor_v1.5.201.2784_Setup.dmp.

- works great with Dropbox in Win 8, but Skydrive option is greyed out.

I'm seeing the same as WayneRM - Skydrive is greyed out so I am unable to add to my Skydrive account. Using the Windows8 app from the appstore I can only use Skydrive but this needs a Boxcryptor folder set up already in the desktop app and I am unable to do this because the option isn't enabled.

Thnx for the reports. We will look into the "SkyDrive greyed out" issue - until then you can still use SkyDrive by choosing "Custom" and then manually browsing to your BoxCryptor Folder in SkyDrive.

Hi All!

We have just released the release candidate of BoxCryptor v1.5! It has the following improvements:

* Added: French language.
* Modified: Removed the ability to enable the recycle bin if the drive is not mounted for all users.
* Fixed: Installer crashes when updating.
* Fixed: Programs cannot be executed with elevated rights if the BoxCryptor Drive is mounted for the current user only.

PS: Regarding the SkyDrive greyed out option: Is SkyDrive properly configured on your computer? In order to detect SkyDrive, it must be properly configured and you must be logged in to it. Sometimes it happens that SkyDrive is installed and running, but this is not enough.

PS in addition: German language setting shows "mount all", "unmount all" in systray context menu

Do I need to manually install this update, or will my current version (1.4) auto-update?

@Geronimo: I'm very sorry that we overlooked your post. We've fixed the language change problem immediately and build a new version with this (small) fix. The few missing strings will be localized in a future update (because we also need to contact our translators for the other languages).
