Error: The configuration file does not exist!

Hi,

first of all I would like to thank you for the great software. I use it for about 4 months now and it worked very well. Unfortunately, today I got following error message:

The configuration file does not exist!
Tried to find it at /Volumes/EXTERNAL-HDD/Dropbox/ENCRYPTED-FOLDER.bc/keyfile.bcx

Before the error ocurred I used the mac(OSX 10.6.8) some days without the external HDD plugged in. The error started to occur the first time when the hdd was not available anymore. But now that it is plugged in again. The error remains and I can't access all my data..

What do I need to do to fix this issue? I really need help on this!

...from my boxcryptor app on my iPad I have access to the files in the dropbox. So the problem must be locally on the mac.

Hi,

Can you please answer the following questions?

1) Is your external hdd mounted to the same path as it was before (/Volumes/EXTERNAL-HDD)?
2) Is the location of the BoxCryptor Folder the same as before (/Volumes/EXTERNAL-HDD/Dropbox/ENCRYPTED-FOLDER.bc)?
3) Does the configuration/key file exist in your BoxCryptor Folder? It's named either ".encfs6.xml" "keyfile.bcx" and located in the root of your BoxCryptor Folder, e.g. /Volumes/EXTERNAL-HDD/Dropbox/ENCRYPTED-FOLDER.bc/.encfs6.xml

Best is to open "Terminal" and enter "ls -la /Volumes/EXTERNAL-HDD/Dropbox/ENCRYPTED-FOLDER.bc" to also show all hidden files.

Hi Robert,

I checked in Terminal and there is a .encfs6.xml file in the root. Could it be the problem that boxcryptor looks for keyfile.bcx, but .encfs6.xml is there?

..I forgot to answer the other questions:

1) yes

Looking for keyfile.bcx is a "fallback" mechanism for providers which do not support the original filename which starts with a dot. BoxCryptor first looks for the ".encfs6.xml" file and if it does not find it, then also looks for "keyfile.bcx". So this should not be the cause.

You could try to "re-open" your BoxCryptor Folder: In the BoxCryptor preferences click on "Open" in the toolbar and choose the BoxCryptor Folder again. Maybe this helps - if not you'd have to wait until tomorrow when Adrian (our Mac guy) is back in the office and then he will try to help you.

This worked and now I have access again. I am sure it will be helpful to others if you consider adding this to your faq.

I just came to search for help for the same problem. I have OS X and the BoxCryptor volume is in an USB stick which is only sometimes mounted on OS X. It used to work but then it stopped working and gave this same message. Actually, it has happened twice already. The last time I think I created a whole new volume. I don't have an "Open" button, perhaps because I set the preferences to advanced mode. I removed the volume and added it back, this fixed the problem for now.
