Hello,
I like BoxCryptor and was considering buying it to run on multiple cloud accounts but I've run into a problem with BoxCryptor while installing it on Windows 8. Could you help?
I've previously installed BoxCryptor (and Box Sync to use with Box) on two personal Windows 7 computers without a problem. However, I'm also evaluating it for business use so I've installed it on a laptop running Windows 8 Enterprise (Version 6.2 Build 9200 English). It installs and then I get the message:
Error loading configuration file
File not found
I have .encfs6.xml in the BoxCryptor directory and it's in plain text (i.e. not encrypted).
Process:
- Using an Administrator account
- install Box Sync and allow all files to be downloaded to C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Box Files
- install BoxCryptor
- English
- Standard install
- Destination Folder: c:\Program Files (x86)\BoxCryptor
- Reboot
- Open a BoxCryptor Folder
- Choose Box (it correctly shows C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Box Files\BoxCryptor.bc)
- Choose drive letter: Z:
- "Congratulations" message (with checkbox: Enter password and open the new BoxCryptor Drive automatically)
- System Tray message: BoxCryptor is now running
- Press 'Close' button
- Error message:
Error loading configuration file
File not found
There is no attempt to ask me to enter my password. If I uncheck the "Enter password and open the new BoxCryptor Drive automatically" box and then right-click on the System Tray icon to select 'Preferences' I see the correct location of the BoxCryptor folder and drive letter Z:, and in Advanced Mode I see the file unmounted. I can't mount the drive this way (manually) either.
The .encfs6.xml is exactly the same file that I have on my desktops where it works - the only major difference I see between the two systems is that I'm using Windows 8 on the new computer - some software environment information:
- BoxCryptor version 1.5.409.148
- Windows 8 Enterprise running in English (US)
- Bitlocker is off
- Windows Defender is on
- Comodo Firewall Free 2012 (but it makes no difference whether it's running or not) version 6.0.2566.2708
- Box Sync version 3.3.51.0
- Installed in C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Box Files\BoxCryptor.bc (i.e. the standard install directory)
- Drive letter: Z:
Aside from TrueCrypt, KeePass, Box Sync and Office Professional Plus 2013 it's running on a clean install of Windows 8 (it's a new computer). Things I might have done before installing Box Sync properly but wished I hadn't: Installing the Box Sync Windows Store SkyDrive app to look at (I didn't connect it to SkyDrive and then removed it).
If I try to run BoxCryptor without a .encfs6.xml file BoxCryptor says "No valid BoxCryptor folder could be detected." which is correct, so it does seem to be aware that the .encfs6.xml file is there.
I spent a lot of time trying to get it to work with the XML file and failed - but after reading:
https://forums.boxcryptor.com/topic/error-the-configuration-file-does-not-exist
I copied my .encfs6.xml file to keyfile.bcx and then mounted the BoxCryptor drive and it gives me the "Enter password" dialog box - I entered my password and it works.
So, success BUT... whereas .encfs6.xml is not synchronised across computers, BoxCryptor does synchronise my keyfile.bcx file - in plain text of course - which means that it can be read by the employees at Box and anyone who gains web or server access - which makes Box a weak link. Yes, I know I'm still protected by my BoxCryptor password but publicly sending keyfile.bcx seems to be needlessly weakening security to me - am I wrong?
I haven't included my XML file here but it's exactly the same as my working version on two other computers so I'm not sure there's anything to learn from it. My gut feeling is it's some kind of Windows 8 compatibility issue because everything else seems the same.
Thanks,
Mike
