What is the difference between encfs and your newly on MacOS introduced BoxCryptorFS? Is it still (and in future) possible to read BoxCryptor-encrypted files with encfs (e.g. on Linux)?

Yes it is still possible to decrypt BoxCryptor folders on Linux. We changed to our own BoxCryptorFS to get a more consistent code base for our desktop envrionments.
