• Accessing encrypted files after reformat or from another device

I have a simple question about the way BoxCryptor works. When you first run BoxCryptor, it creates a file called BoxCryptor_config.xml.

Is this file supposed to be backed up and needed when I need to reformat and, eventually, have to decrypt my files again to access them?

Or do I just need to install BoxCryptor and know the password? Thanks.

    Hello,

Every Boxcryptor Classic Folder contains a configuration file named ".encfs6.xml" (e.g. Dropbox\BoxCryptor.bc\.encfs6.xml). This file contains the actual encryption key (secured with your password). If this file is lost, the Boxcryptor Classic Folder cannot be decrypted anymore - even if you know the correct password.

Under normal circumstances you do not need that backup - all you need is your Boxcryptor Classic Folder, your password and our Classic software. But due to the importance of this file we recommend to have a separate backup (BoxCryptor_config.xml) in case the original configuration file gets lost for whatever reason.

    Best regards,
    Robert
