Boxcryptor adds "_encryted" or "_decrypted" to folder name

Hi,

every time I'm encrypting a folder in Boxcryptor it adds "_encrypted" to the folder name and when I decrypt it again it adds "_decrypted". If I do that several times it is adding this "extension" again and again.

Example:
MyFolder -encrypt-> MyFolder_encrypted -decrypt-> MyFolder_encrypted_decrypted -encrypt-> MyFolder_encrypted_decrypted_encrypted (and so on...)

This behaviour is quite annoying.

Does anyone has an idea if this is a bug or a feature?

Hi cyrix2000,

it is a feature, not a bug :). If you encrypt a folder, then the folder will be copied instead of renaming, so we have to add a suffix. You can rename the folder without problems after the encryption/decryption.

Hi Gustav!
Could you include the option to change this behaviour? I expect folders to behave just like files, e.g. when i decide to encrypt one, all the folders and files are encrypted recursively and there is no copy. Files aren't copied and renamed either. Since my hdd space is limited and my dropbox full of files and folders I'd like to encrypt, creating a copy of everything isn't an option, recursively manually going through thousands of folders is neither.
Also: can the top level folder somehow be set to encrypted too, so that any new files i save to it (e.g. x:/dropbox) are encrypted?

So I did rename my FOLDER_ENCRYPTED to FOLDER and all sorts of poop happened. Files disappeared, and eventually I had two folders: FOLDER_ENCRYPTED and FOLDER, both of which had a variety of files. I eventually merged both of them only to find that a subfolder existed in name only, but no files existed in the subfolder. In addition, file manager told me that the folder was not accessable.

I've since restored from a backup so that's all good.
You should also know that these files are subject to Dropbox.

@Tim: Sorry, we cannot include such an option. In our experience, many storage providers simply have too many problems with folder rename operations so we choose the "safe" way and create a new folder where the encrypted/decrypted files are placed and remove the original folder at the end. (Actually files are handled similar with the difference that Boxcryptor renames it to the original name at the end because file renames are handled better by the providers.)

@Alex: It sounds like you experienced a Dropbox syncing issue. After the encryption finished, Dropbox syncs the new _encrypted folder. If the sync is still running while the folder is renamed Dropbox is having problems some times - especially when it's a large folder. (That's one of the reasons why we do not automatically rename it back to the original name.) This should not occur if Dropbox sync is paused before the encryption process (and resumed after the final rename) or if you wait with the folder rename until the sync has finished.

I second cyrix2000. This behaviour is really annoying. At least give us the option. Maybe rename doesn't work well with Dropbox but may work fine with Google Drive, Box, ect...
