Locking out the owner of a shared folder

Testing the free version of BoxCryptor, it is possible for a user, with access rights on another user's (owner) data, to change the rights and disallow the owner from accessing his data. Apart from this, attempts to reinstate the owner's previous rights end with a error message.

Hello,

Boxcryptor currently does not differentiate between "owners" or other users with access. Everybody with access to a file can modify the file itself and also the permissions and thus it is possible to remove the original creator of the file from the permissions.

Well, that's really a problem. So anybody could lock someone out from hiser/her dropbox for example. Are there any plan on adding a feature for ownership?

Further, how about re-adding a previously removed owner? I attempted doing this from the account used for removing access rights, but was unable to reinstate a user's access rights.

It's only a real problem if you cannot trust the other users - but if you share access to them it can be assumed that you trust them - at least partially.

But I understand that the concept of ownership makes sense for certain use cases and we plan to support such a concept in the future. (The same applies also to groups.)

Sorry if I ask again, but regarding the problem with returning access rights to the former "owner" of the files or folders: I'm still having that problem and couldn't sort it out. Any ideas what might be the reason for this?

Hi,

If you don't have access rights in Boxcryptor anymore, it is not possible for you to "restore" them. Possible solutions for this situation can be:

1) You ask any of the other users with access, to grant you access again.
2) Because the Boxcryptor permissions are stored directly within the encrypted file, you can regain access by restoring a version of the encrypted file before your access has been removed. This will also restore the file contents.
