I have the free version of Boxcryptor. I want to put the Boxcryptor Destination on my NAS. I have a MacBook with Yosemite + a Synology NAS on my LAN. My queries are as follows:

A) I believe that I can put the Boxcryptor Destination on the NAS. Please confirm. Assuming I do this can you tell me how the data flows??

I create the Boxcryptor Destination on my NAS. I create a folder in the Boxcryptor destination that is encrypted. I copy files/folders into the Boxcryptor encrypted folder. For Boxcryptor to encrypt these files/folders, can Boxcryptor encrypt these files directly on the NAS or do the files/folders have to brought back to the Mac to be encrypted and then re-exported to the NAS having been encrypted?? The reason for the question is the efficiency for the process I use??

B) I have enabled “Mount as disk” and “Mount for all users” in Boxcryptor. Using Carbon Copy Cloner (“CCC") to backup to the Boxcryptor destination I seem to be able to set the CCC destination as either a folder or a disk image. Which would you recommend for best performance/reliability?? Are there any disadvantages to either??

C) I am using Boxcryptor with a Local Account. I have looked at:
<https://www.boxcryptor.com/en/technical-overview> which states:

"Boxcryptor implements a combined encryption process based on asymmetric RSA and symmetric AES encryption. Every file has its own unique random file key which is generated when the file is being created. The file key is used to encrypt and decrypt the contents of the file as follows:
Encryption:
1.Create a secure random file key.
2.Encrypt the plaintext data using the file key.
3.Encrypt the file key with the user's public key.
4.Store the encrypted file key next to the encrypted data in the encrypted file.
5.If multiple users have access to a file, the file key is encrypted multiple times with different user public keys and each result is stored in the encrypted file.
Decryption:
1.Decrypt the encrypted file key using the user's private key.
2.Decrypt the encrypted data using the file key.”

I have looked in Finder but cannot see "the encrypted file key next to the encrypted data in the encrypted file”. Am I missing something Where is it??

Is the Boxcryptor Keyfile "[ ].bckey" where my private and public key are stored encrypted with my password??

Many thanks.

    Hello,

    A) Yes, you can use Boxcryptor locations directly on your NAS.

    B) I could imagine that the performance of a disk image is a little bit better than of a folder image but besides that there is no recommendation from our side.

    C) "the encrypted file key next to the encrypted data _IN_ the encrypted file". I hope this makes it more clear (the encrypted file key is stored within the encrypted file, not in a separate file). And yes, the Boxcryptor key file (.bckey) contains your encrypted private key and your public key.

Thanks for your response. Just one part unanswered, viz:

        Hello,

You can use folders on your NAS directly as locations in Boxcryptor. This means, that when copying a file to the Boxcryptor drive, the file is encrypted (in memory) and the encrypted file is written directly to the folder on your NAS.

        Best regards,
        Robert
