• bckey saved on the cloud

Dear support,

I've exoprted my *.bckey from my "boxcryptor setting account".

--> Can I store it on the - unsecured (onedrive, google drive, dropbox) - cloud as it (without encryption)?

I mean, in case of permanently failure of boxcryptor servers, I want to be able to decrypt my files, so, I plan to use exported keys, but if these ones are encrypted I couldn't use it. I need to keep them decrypted somewhere.

But as all my files are synchronised with the cloud, are exported keys can be used by a hacker to decrypted all other encrypted files? (without my password)

thank you for your reply,

Baptiste

Hello, any answer to my question ?

Is it necessary to keep away from cloud (onedrive) my *.bckey file? Is a hacker could easily use this file to decrypt my datas ? Thanks

      Hi baptisteel,

Sorry for the late reply! You can save your bckey file unencrypted to the cloud as all of it's content is encrypted with your password. However, keep in mind that people having access to that file AND your current password can decrypt all of your data regardless of any further password changes in Boxcryptor. So before exporting your bckeys, ensure to use a secure Boxcryptor password.

      Kind regards,
      Florian Obermayer

Thank you Florian helped me make it clear. I had better keep bckey locally.

What happens if Boxcryptor goes out of business and the software stops working. What happens to all of my encrypted files?

            Hello,

In order to be prepared for the event that the Boxcryptor servers are shut down for whatever reason (e.g. our company goes out of business), it is recommended to export your keys and store the key file in your area of responsibility (in addition to the installers of our clients and/or the portable version). As your stored keys might change over time, it is recommended to regularly export your keys (e.g. once a month).

Having a local key file with your exported keys allows you to use this key file to sign in with a local account and access your encrypted files in such a situation where our servers would be permanently unavailable.
