My spouse used Boxcryptor on her laptop to store a large number of scanned documents in OneDrive. All worked well for a while, but after upgrading to Windows 10 Boxcryptor stopped working correctly. Instead of fixing it then, she simply started using the folders to store non-encrypted data. Today she asked me to retire the machine and move everything to her new Mac, which is when I discovered she no longer has access to these files. I’m hoping there are enough breadcrumbs left on her system for me to determine how recover this data.
I need some assistance understanding 1) how to determine which version of Boxcryptor she used. 2) how to determine how she stored her private key and 3) the proper steps to decrypt these files.
I see folders with files that have been renamed with Asian glyphs so I suspect she used Boxcryptor Classic for a while. I also see files with .bc extensions and FolderKey.bch files which I assume are for the more recent version. I do not know if she used a local account or a Boxcryptor server account, but I can likely recover any username/password she used to encrypt this data. I know that if I can not recover the private key everything is gone.
I’ve been a software engineer for 29 years and routinely work with encryption tech, I just don’t know exactly what I’m dealing with here. A little help would be greatly appreciated.
