• Very poor r/w-performance

Due to the slow linking of BC1 I changed my output directory (from BC-drive to local drive) and did some new tests:

Boxcryptor 1 (filename encryption enabled) : 0:15 min
Boxcryptor 2 (filename encryption disabled) : 1:25 min

I also wanted to test how Cryptomator performs.
But I had plenty of locked files (couldn't access them anymore within the drive) or couldn't even create folders when I copied my original data into the cryptomator drive.
The copy speed is also very slow. So I conclude (without being able to test) that it cannot be faster than BC2

    Cryptomator is buggy and cannot handle read-only files atm. For a Windows-User it is also very annoying (and it took me more than an hour to adjust my data) that it is case-sensitive (and this would be for me a no-go).
    But here are the test results:

    Cryptomator (filename encryption enabled, output in the vault) : 0:50 min
    Cryptomator (filename encryption enabled, output on normal disc) : 0:40 min

    The speed is similar to BC1 (when data stays in the vault).
    I can use BC1 still for some months. But with Windows 10 I have to change it.
    Newer computer will be faster. But neither Cryptomator nor Boxcryptor 2 are the tools which could replace BC1 atm. This is very sad.

    And the reply of the support does not give me much hope that the performance will be increased:

    If the setting doesn't help much, there's probably nothing more we can do here.
    I'm sorry I can't give you a better answer here.

      Did some testing with fewer files and other cloud provider. Can confirm that Boxcryptor 2 does not scale with huge amount of files. I could bear lower r/w speed (like you ;-). But waiting 10 secs for a folder to expand - on a high-end notebook - is not acceptable! I still have no idea how to work around that issue :-(

      Now thinking about decoupling encryption & sync from working with my active notebook

      - use the file collection as-is on the local drive
      - secure the local drive with Bitlocker or VeraCrypt
      - Resilio-Sync the files to another machine, which does the annoying Boxcryptor Encr./OneDrive-Sync in the background

        Seems this is not the right place to get help from the boxcryptor team.

          Hello ghostcrypter1969,

          what for news? Concerning what?

          Yasmin

            @dt1807

            You talk from "EnableHighPerformanceMode". How can I test it?

              I asked for news concerning the speed. I use Boxcryptor (Unlimited Personal) since one year, mostly with Dropbox (until now 120 GB of data). From then to today I noticed that whenever I change the directory structure in my Dropbox (Boxcryptor) disk, Boxcryptor takes up a lot of CPU work for days and this causes randomly my MacBook Pro (15" retina Mid 15, 500 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM) freezes. investigating this problem, I read many posts on this forum and discovered that Boxcryptor uses only one core of my CPU and that for you the speed of program execution was not a priority. Here, I wanted to know if finally you have taken into consideration to put hand to all the problems related to the slowness and the inefficient way to exploit the power of the processor ..

                @tarkettleonardo,
                please get the latest version (2.35.1033) from our web site and see if runs faster for you, we have improved the performance.
                @ghostcrypter1969.
                may I ask you which version are you using?

                  Hi,
                  I use 2.27.977 version macosx. As reported by your check, that would be the last version ...

                    I'm encountering similar performance issues. Symptom's are that after some larger operations (copying a couple dozen images into an encrpyted folder), or even a random small operation like moving a single file, File explorer in Windows 10 will start performing slowly, even when doing operations not on the boxcryptor folders. Only fix is to either force kill boxcryptor (good for a few operations then problems come back) or reboot the computer then it'll be good for anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on how many files are being moved.

                    Example of how bad it gets, I was copy three files totalling 200kB into an excrypted folder and file explorer paused at "calculating" for close to 10min. Problem is not windows as this slowness wasn't present before I installed boxcryptor, and went away as soon as I uninstalled the program.

                    CPU: Intel i7-7500
                    Boxcryptor: 2.35.1033

                    This fixed it for me: You HAVE TO have your storage paths on a SSD, on a hdd that is on 100%, boxcryptor hangs and everything just crashes. On a ssd, boxcryptor is much more fluent!! All storage locations have to be on a ssd, it is not enough to install boxcryptor on a ssd.
