Problem using Google Drive File Stream and Boxcryptor

I've been using Boxcryptor with Google Drive successfully for a few years. I recently upgraded to a brand new Windows 10 computer and installed Google Drive File Stream.

Now I cannot open any files from my Boxcryptor drive, whether they are encrypted or not. I get a message that says, "On-Demand Files, Google Drive File Stream is currently downloading this file. Try again later. Boxcryptor" All files list correctly with indication of the ones encrypted. Un-encrypted files open with no problem from the standard Google drive and Dropbox works great. Another one of my computers running Google Drive File Stream is working OK.

I tried reinstalling Boxcryptor and Google Drive File Stream with no success. Anyone have similar issues? Help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Soundscape,

Google recently updated their File Stream client which caused an incompatibility with Boxcryptor.

We could isolate the problem and have build an experimental Boxcryptor version that should fix the issue:

Thanks for this! I had the same issue, new PC running Windows 10, and had the exact same symptoms. So glad and lucky I found this thread. I was pulling my hair out!

My question is why hasn't Boxcryptor pushed this new version out in a regular update. There have to be many more people with this issue.

Thanks, I'm also using this experimental Boxcryptor version.
For a normal use it is ok, but for encrypting/uploading 1000s of files, it often runs into an error, sometimes even the whole system freezes (Win 10). And I must say, I use my laptop for a year now with Boxcryptor and had never even one freeze or crash of the system so far.

Could you check this please? I have enabled sending anonymous usage data.

And can you say when you will update the stable version of Boxcryptor with this updated file stream support?

Yes i agree with above comment.If desired results are normal then it is cool but uploading bulk amount of files often causes error.Boxcryptor really needs to introduce new version,as no of people facing this issue are increasing day by day.

@Florian I'm running into issues with Google Drive File Stream on Mac OS X. Any chance of that same experimental build for Mac OS X? I'm unable to access my encrypted files, and that's not great as that's the point of me getting a Boxcryptor subscription in the first place.

I recently developed a similar problem where Boxcryptor is no longer working properly with Google Drive File Stream (DFS). One problem occurs when I try to re-save (a previously saved) Excel file. MS Excel says it cannot access the file and gives reasons as possibly: filename or path is incorrect; file in use by another program;workbook has same name as currently open workbook. None of the reasons is true. The Excel file saves fine the first (1st) time but not subsequently. If a copy is made of the file and placed in a folder not under Boxcryptor, there is no problem saving. In addition, some of the Excel files stored in DFS previously have become corrupted' likewise for MS Word files stored using Boxcryptor in Drive File Stream. I have definitely isolated problem to interaction of Boxcryptor and DFS. I have used Boxcryptor with DFS for over 2 years and never had this problem before. Cannot use Boxycryptor now with DFS. :-(

I'm having a similar issue which started the past two days. Excel doesn't allow me to save my work via Boxcryptor destination. If I save a new or existing file directly to Google Drive File Stream, my desktop, or anywhere else I have no issues so this pretty much tells me its a Boxcryptor issue.

And I agree totally. Have never had any issues prior so wondering what is going on. Hope someone can give us an update soon.

I'm also having an issue which startet approximately a week ago.

I'm not able to save files via boxcryptor to Google Drive File Stream. I'm getting errors und Windows File Explorer freezes randomly.

Version: v2.33.933
OS: Windows 10 with latest updates

If I deactivate boxcryptor, windows explorer works without problems.

Experiencing the same issues on OSX:

Boxcryptor: v2.27.977
Google Drive File Stream: v30.1.36.2343
OS: mac v10.14.4

I can open and save existing Microsoft Office products (specifically Excel) straight from Google File Stream, but this same process will result in an error on save when doing it through Boxcryptor. The temp file that Office creates will be created no problem, but Office is unable to overwrite the document file.

Unfortunately we were not able to resolve my issue and my problem has appeared to spread to Backup & Sync as well as FS.

Additional info:
MS Office: v16.24
Backup and Sync from Google: v3.43

I have tried full uninstalls (including preference and other Library files) of MS Office, Boxcryptor, Backup & Sync, and FS with no luck. Every time I try to open and save an encrypted Excel file, an error pops up and only the temp file is saved. I have also tried reverting to earlier versions of MS Office and earlier and experimental versions of Boxcryptor.

This issue does not affect my wife's mac, where (1) Google FS was never installed, and (2) MS Office: v16.16.

Following up. I was able to resolve my issue by downgrading MS Office for Mac to v16.15. Not sure about the versions after 16.15, but v16.23-16.25 do not work with Boxcryptor as they do not properly remove the temporary file from Boxcryptor's network drive, causing a save failure and the error message that I was seeing.

Update 2: I confirmed that this problem was introduced in Office for Mac 2016 v16.16 and is still present in Office for Mac 2019 v16.26

Any progress here? I am having the same problem with Boxcryptor and Excel 2019 for Mac (V16.27). I would think not being able to save the most recent version of Excel files with Boxcryptor is a pretty big deal, no?

Update: So it turns out that my issue wasn’t related to Boxcryptor at all. I tried to save a file with square brackets [ ] in the pathname and apparently there is an Excel 2019 for Mac bug that prevents the file from saving. Without the square brackets, I can save the file just fine….
