Editing and saving Google Drive files on Android

Hello! I have tried finding the answer to this question in the forum but was surprised to not find anything. If I missed it, please point me to the answer.

I recently upgraded to Boxcryptor 2.85 on my Android tablet running Android 8.1. I would like to edit and save changes on Android to my encrypted file that is stored on Google Drive. The Boxcryptor documentation implies I can do this. I can successfully open the file using the Word app, but am told it is a read-only version. (this may be an Android "feature" of Word accessing Google Drive). I have tried using Google Docs and Officesuite to edit the file, but neither of them offers Boxcryptor as a choice like Word does. Google Docs on its own doesn't know what to do with .bc files and Officesuite doesn't either.

So on Android, what other editing app knows how to work with Boxcryptor?

Or is editing a Google Drive file not possible on Android?

Hi,

Yes it is possible to open and edit files in Microsoft Word. To do this it does not matter which storage provider you are using.

Also as a best practice you should open Word files directly from Microsoft Word. To do so open Microsoft Word -> Open -> Browse (Google Drive and more...) -> Select Boxcryptor -> Select the file you want to open

Regarding the read-only issue (which should not occur): What Android device do you use? Which file type do you want to open exactly (.doc .docx etc.)? Do you have a Office 365 subscription and entered your Office 365 credentials in Microsoft Word?

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the delay since I was traveling.

I do open up the file as you recommend: bring up Word app, choose Boxcryptor, open file.

My Android device is a Samsung Galaxy Tab A, running Android 8.1.0. I do not have an Office 365 subscription since I rarely use Word. The file is a .txt file. I just tried it again and it says it is only a read-only version.

Is there any other app I can use on Android? It's only a text file so I don't need a spectacular editor.

Hi aromweis,

If you use Microsoft Word without subscription, you can only view and not edit documents.
I recommend you to use another editor. "QuickEdit Text Editor" is a good solution.
It will allow you to send files from Boxcryptor to the app and sync changes back.
You can also open your files directly from the app via "File" -> "Open (SAF)" -> Open left menu -> Boxcryptor
