Hi all,
I recently thought that Boxcryptor could become the dream solution for my planned scenario, being as such:
- unencrypted files and folders are being copied manually by means of Syncovery backup software
- source medium is an unencrypted local HDD
- target medium is a BC drive linked to a OneDrive Personal folder
- the latter sits on an external Lacie D2 Pro HDD being connected locally via USB-C; this one is brand-new and has no reported errors; problem moreover existed with predecessor disk just exchanged couple of days ago
- approx. 200k files in almost 3k folders lead to almost 2.5 TB of storage capacity in total, organized in 6 main folders, one of which belongs to my personal OneDrive account and five being shared folders from other OneDrive accounts
- the largest path depth is 208 characters, the largest folder depths is 13 (not overlapping)
- OS is Windows 10 Pro 64-bit with latest updates
- network connection is 5 Gbit Wifi hooked up to an internet router having a 200/20 mpbs asynchronous cable connection.
Up until now my dream didn't come fully true, though...
And that's because extremely long delays or even error messages about "inaccessible subfolders" occur during practically each backup process I'm starting.
Cross-checking this by means of Windows Explorer, my findings are:
- I'm able to jump through the OneDrive subfolders in no time, ie. with practically no delay, when exploring them directly in their "native" environment
- but when accessing the same (or other) subfolders via the BC drive, sometimes these folders that just few seconds ago still worked fine the direct way cannot now be accessed at all via the BC drive; see attachment
- or if they can, sometimes only after an enormous delay which I've manually measured between 5s and whopping 3.5 minutes, just for opening one single subdirectory in Windows Explorer; no wonder that Syncovery cannot handle that...
- and this even in multiple consecutive trials with the exact same folder (hence Boxcryptor doesn't even seem to cache anything); again: it takes some minutes to open a folder, then I leave it and reopen it, and the tedious loading process starts over again...
- however, I cannot speak of reproducability as the problems occur in a very inconsistent and sporadic way, and the vast majority of the folders can indeed be read without any issue.
Any thoughts about possible bugs, misconfigurations, misconceptions, anything else?
Has someone perhaps faced the exact same type of problem? Of course I used the search function but didn't stumble upon comparable cases.
Many thanks for any kind of feedback.
Regards from Berlin, Marc
