  • Boxcryptor for macOS 3.x Feedback

Christian
Hi Christian, currently I'm not able to run such a screen recording. I have stopped BC 3.8 and re-installed 2.46 so I can recover my files within a reasonable amount of time (mount the local, encrypted stores and copy them (unencrypted to a new local space). Once all that is done (still ongoing), I'll have to decide how to go on from there. Ideally, you guys will come up with a solution for the local storage provider issue.

BTW: Once with 3.8 had everything copied into Library/CloudStorage/... will there be any kind of restrictions w.r.t. working in that location in macos? (Apple has often introduced some more-or-less weird restrictions with those "system-defined" locations, e.g. w.r.t. access privileges, visibility, permissions, ...)?

If not, defining a cloud storage provider (e.g. OneDrive, iCloud, ...), so that BC makes the directory, then stopping BC, moving (or copying) everything I have locally to that new directory, then restarting BC could be a workaround for the performance issue for me. I could then work on my files in that location rather than somewhere else below my home directory.

If BC's sync logic would finally recognize that the Cloud provider already has (encrypted) versions of all files (synced with the Cloud service provider's native sync client while the old BC 2.46 was active) there would even be no need to re-encrypt and re-upload everything from Library/ClousStore into that Cloud. Even if that latter scenario would not work, I had everything in one place locally (and immediately) and the BC sync to the Cloud services (upload rather than download) would not stop me from working, so I could easily wait for some days for this to finish...

Best
Marc

How can I share a Boxcryptor Folder via link with somebody else?

In follow up to my comment, may I clarify whether macOS Preview & Spotlight are supported - I'm not seeing support but it may be a quirk with my setup, in which case I'd hate to be missing out!?

Yours hopefully

ldexterldesign apologies, I just discovered it's Quicklook not Preview I'm referring too

NoteBookUser I'm not sure if I understand correctly, but it seems that you have the inner working of the old Boxcryptor App in mind - the 3.x version on MacOS works significantly different.

Boxcryptor no longer has a physical folder that it creates and to which the encrypted files are stored. This was necessary with the old version, as Boxcryptor did not do the synchronization itself but left it to the sync app of the provider.

The new app is talking directly with the provider online. That means that every folder and file you see when browsing into the Boxcryptor location is not really existing on your system yet. It only gets downloaded when you open it or specifically request "Download Now" from the context menu. But even in that case, there is no singular or well defined folder in which the files get downloaded. Boxcryptor downloads the file and hands it over to Finder itself, which is then responsible to store it somewhere. But this is outside of the control of the app.

This also means that any workaround expecting a folder "below" the Boxcryptor location cannot work - there is no such folder. It also means that there is no necessity to re-encrypt or re-upload anything. If the Boxcryptor files have been synced to the cloud, you will have them displayed right in the Boxcryptor location and can work with them from there.

That being said, there is an easy way to simulate the inner working of the old Boxcryptor app if you want to do so: Install your cloud storage provider's sync app and add it to Boxcryptor as a local storage. Then, you have the intermediate folder that you were looking for in the form of the provider's sync folder.

    Best regards,
    Christian

Daniel-Muc Just open the context menu on one or more files and select "Create Whisply Link".
Disclaimer: This works only for Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive, and currently only for files.

ldexterldesign Spotlight should be supported, but is currently limited to files and folders that you already listed once before in Finder. That is because Finder only lists files when browsing to them - otherwise it is not aware of their existence. So it's a technical limitation.

Quicklook might work for files that are already downloaded - in that case it is up to Finder to offer it or to not offer it. Online files would have to be downloaded in order to show a preview for them. Finder might opt to do so, but I figure it to be rather unlikely and would Finder expect to rather not show any preview of the file instead.

Christian I don't really understand how the Spotlight indexing works. Does that mean I can't save files directly in my Boxcryptor directory I have to save them first unencrypted on my Mac? Or do I just have to browse to the Boxcryptor folder and open this?

      Christian
Christian, I don't think you got me right. Can/shall we take that offline?

I'm pretty sure I understand the inner working of the new Boxcryptor, but my impression is that you might not fully comprehend my usage scenario and the questions/problems resulting from it.

Mail exchange or a video call would both be fine with me...

Otherwise, I can, of course, continue here as well.
      Best

Whenever I delete a file or folder in Google Drive from Finder (BoxCryptor - Google Drive) the item is deleted from my Google Drive as expected. However, the item appears to be permanently deleted since it cannot be found in my Google Drive Trash folder, as is the normal behaviour when deleting from Google Drive on the Web.

This seems to work fine in OneDrive. Whenever I delete files or folders from OneDrive using Finder (BoxCryptor - OneDrive) , they are transferred to the OneDrive Recycle Bin.

Is this a bug, or intentional? In order to avoid accidental data loss, I would expect the same behaviour for my Google Drive.

      Best,
      Jason

      Hi Jason,

      thanks for reporting this!

We have fixed the issue, it will be available in the next Boxcryptor update.

      Best regards,
      Florian

As mentioned in another post... why are tags you add to files not synced? Tags on files or folders are supported on both mac and iOS, aren't they?

Hi Florian Great news. Do you have an estimate when this update will be available? I am reluctant to use the current version with Google Drive, which is my main cloud provider due to fear of accidental deletions.

Edit: I just tested the most recent version 3.9.2, and it doesn't seem to be fixed there.

      Best regards,
      Jason

And why does the version number start so high? If 3.x is a new version, why are we now already at 3.8? By the way... something newer is not offered to me by the automatic update, although according to the changelog version 3.9.264 already exists.

      Florian
I traveled back in time. My version is newer then the one available from the updater!

      Hi everybody,

Last week we've released version 3.9 which resolves some of the issues reported so far. It is only being delivered to 3.8 users via auto-update since today which is also the reason why the auto-updater showed 3.8 as the latest version up until today. We're already working hard on version 3.10 with further fixes and improvements.

Jason The change will be included in the next version 3.10 which should be available latest next week. Just in case you are interested, you can try this internal nightly build which already contains it:
      https://static.boxcryptor.com/download/Boxcryptor_v3.10.281_Installer.dmg

fubali The macOS File Provider API does not support synchronization of tags. Boxcryptor never receives any information about tags from macOS and thus also cannot synchronize them. Other File Provider apps (like e.g. the new OneDrive app) have the same restriction and Apple would have to take action on this.

fubali Versions 3.0 - 3.7 were internal and beta versions leading up to the final release of the new 3.x generation. 3.8 was the first official release.

      Best regards,
      Robert

NoteBookUser Sounds good, please write a short message to support@boxcryptor.com with a mention of this thread (and any supporting material such as screenshots, screenrecords) for this discussion.
This will get forwarded to me and we can solve this more efficiently than through here.

Daniel-Muc If you add something to the Boxcryptor Location, Spotlight should be able to pick it up. It is only difficult for Spotlight to do so if the file you're looking for is in a folder that you have never visited through the Boxcryptor location before.
If you have a file A that you want to have indexed by Spotlight, just browse to the folder containing the item and you should be good to go.
Again, if that doesn't work, let me know through support@boxcryptor.com with a reference to this thread - because then we're dealing with a bug.

Do I understand this correctly: after installing Boxcryptor and adding e.g. iCloud Drive as Cloud provider, I can see everything that's already on my iCloud Drive inside the Boxcryptor Disk view, exactly as if I opened iCloud Drive directly in Finder; the only visual difference are encrypted files or folders, which are displayed unencrypted in Boxcryptor, and encrypted / unreadable in Finder.
To add files or folders without encryption, I need to make sure I'm using iCloud Disk in Finder.
To add files or folders with encryption, I either have to use iCloud Disk in Boxcryptor (which looks 99% identical to Finder), or use Finder and then switch to Boxcryptor to find the file/folder and then encrypt it.

I guess what I'm missing is a (switchable) view in Boxcryptor where I only see encrypted files/folders, as this might make it more easily viewable which view I'm in, and therefore what's going to happen to the files/folders I'm about to put in there.

Also, I'm positive that the warning message when deleting a Cloud provider in Boxcryptor could be improved – «all your files in iCloud Drive will be removed» is definitely not something I, and I guess most Mac users, would like to happen.

Robert I have downloaded build 281, and deletion now works just fine.
Thanks for fixing this so quickly!
