Clarification of what Dropbox sale means to free users/ local key file

Hi - I use just the basic free service with a local key file, so I assume I have nothing on the Boxcryptor servers apart from an email address for news and updates. Can I continue to use the service going forwards after the Dropbox sale? Or will my use / access to the software suddenly end in January?

I assume the software won't be updated which is a risk, but I have a copy of the latest exe file should I need to reinstall, so would that still function?

I would love to know the same thing. Until I can find an alternative that I like as much, I want to know that my files will continue to be accessible if I have always used a local account.

davidbashman Yes, a lack of clarity! I think if they don't reply the main thing is to have at least two unencrypted backups, and maybe see what happens on 1 Feb?

Same here..... I've been using Free Account for more than a decade on multiple devices.

To bypass restriction using multiple devices, I had configured all my PC/Laptop instances of Boxcryptor to use a LOCAL key, This is working just fine in combination with Google Drive. So I do not see WHY it should stop working once they shutdown their servers.
Nevertheless, I won't take risk, and I'm now looking into Cryptomator (+Gdrive). It is open source + it has an Android client. So a perfect replacement of Boxcryptor.....

I wish I could say that Cryptomator is a perfect replacement. It feels like going back in time to have to use MacFUSE again to access the files. Opening anything that is reasonably large or complex (Quicken file, for example) is painfully slow. I also don't trust MacFUSE at all, or kexts for that matter. If they had a File Provider for macOS like they do for iOS, I'd be all in. I'm considering trying to port their iOS app to macOS and see how far I get. I want a native Mac/iPhone experience, but the safety and security of open source.

Transition done for me.
--> Moved out from BC.

Switched to Cryptomator + OneDrive (My new company does not let Gdrive through Firewall)
Working great, just like BC + Gdrive before.
Only downside is the Android App for Cryptomator being a bit pricey, but it is a one time payment so.... Paid it 🙂
