Getting "We Sold our Technology Assets to Dropbox" to my mailbox just now feels like someones bad joke. I see the financial reason for this, but... I am sad to see my favourite encryption software going out from the market and leaving myself and many happy users in the dust.
I would imagine that up to 90% of all customers will stop using tech provided by BoxCryptor.
Believing in good causes by DropBox is the same as to believe that Condoleezza Rice, who is at the board of directors there, cares about peoples lives.
I wan't to remember one other merger which would make me as sad as this one but I cannot think of any. Skype was ruined by Microsoft, but... Skype, unlike BoxCryptor, is not a very special and unique product.
My firm believe is that DropBox Inc simply does not want strong players on the market who help people around the world to maintain privacy. Thus they simply bought BoxCryptor - will use some of the tech... and call it day.
DropBox today is fine as it is. Whoever is using it - is already using it and are happy with the security and privacy that this platform provides.
BoxCryptor users seek additional layer of security, not some kind of corporate integrated solution into the product we do not need.
I have ditched both Google Drive and DropBox ages ago in favour of Nextcloud instance.
I know that there is nothing to do about this. What is done is done.
My biggest support to all present employees of BoxCryptor who would much prefer to stay independent and continue to provide a solution that works with any cloud provider. I know that some of you feel cut off your vision in a big way.
To all the present users of BoxCryptor who happen to see this thread, please provide mention any solutions that allow multiple people work with the same set of files as BoxCryptor does now.
I do see that Cryptomator have a big banner on the homepage directed to all users of BoxCryptor who now are looking for alternative. I know that Cryptomator Hub should allow just this and it should be released in Early 2023.
If someone can point to any other solutions I should keep my eyes on - please mention my username in this thread, so that I see the notification.
If anyhow BoxCryptor API will find the light in another encryption solution, which will be separate from DropBox - please let me know about this at Telegram (ivan86).
I wish all the best to Andrea and Robert. I know this was not an easy decision to make. And thank you for what you have done.
Big thanks to all the developers, support, sales and all the team in general for being there all these years whenever you were needed.
Thank you all the fellow members for all the great feedback you were providing so that together we could enjoy the best file encryption service out there.
My future is not tied to DropBox, thus I am leaving the fleet...
