• Slow encryption and no Picture Upload

Hi there,
since i use Boxcryptor the Data handling got really slow. And I don't mean Uploading the files to the cloud. I mean simply copying files into an encrypted folder. With Boxcryptor the copying speed goes down to 500 kb/s (on an SSD btw.)

Another problem is on Android. The Boxcryptor description says that one can choose the folder where to upload the encrypted pictures to. But this option is not available on my App. The App I have always tries to upload directly onto the cloud...not in any Folder. This is of course not allowed and all I get are error masseges

Luckyly I checked this with the free version. And, unless anyone here can give me an Idea why even these simple processes do not work aceptable, I'm for sure not buying.

So does anyone have any idea, wha I might have done wrong?

Boxcryptor has a certain overhead regarding encryption/decryption of files. Especially when copying many small files into an encrypted folder, you will see a decreased operation speed, as for every new file a 4kb header is created including encryption keys etc.

Unfortunately, our documentation is a bit outdated here. With the latest Boxcryptor Android app, The #CameraUpload feature will automatically upload your photos to the Boxcryptor Photos folder.

As far as I understand you might want to tell your photos "sync" app to download to a certain folder in Boxcryptor. If your app can access the #StorageAccessFramework you might be able to select your desired folder within Boxcryptor like so:

Alternatively of course, you can use Boxcryptor's Camera Upload.

Florian Hi Florian, I just tested that. With bigger Files it loos fast at first. But then the Filemanager freezes. After resetting the Computer I found that only 1/4 of the file has been written to to boxcyptor folder. So the Speed for big files seems to be only show. The system tells me 400 MB are written and after 10 minutes of freezed File manager still only 100 mb are actually i the Folder.
This actually does not look like the way I would like to work.

    Florian Hi Florian,
Sorry but that is not true. As I wrote it is trying to save directly on the cloud surface. It does not crate such folder. Neither does it ask me to creat it. All I get is the error message that an Upload error occured. The saving Taget in the settings also specificalle states that it wants to savo directly onto the cloud. No Subfolder given there.

      Florian Hi Florian,
What are you talking about? Boxcryptor is the Sync App. Your discription sais the original App is not needed. So I dont install it. However, yes I can access the Framework over Boxcryptor. I can manually upload and download files. I can encrypt and decrypt. Thats all fine in android. I already have several encrypted folders on the cloud and therfore also on the phone. Still the App does not allow be to chose these folders for the pictureupload. And basically thats all I want Boxcyptor to do for me on the phone. Encrypt and upload the pictures automatically.

        Hi BinKeiner,
As Florian said, the documentation for Android is unfortunately a bit outdated.
The app should create a directory called "Boxcryptor Photos" and tries to upload the detected media files there. As we choose where to place this directory it is not specifically shown in the UI but only which provider will be used for the camera upload.
For most storage providers, this is created in the root directory. We are aware of providers who have a read-only root and we try to select a better location in such cases.

If you tell me which provider you are using, I'll check where we're trying to create the directory.

          Nicole Hi Nicole,
first things first: Thank you very much that you are responding that fast here and try to help me out.
As I said before I am with Ionos Hidrive. On Root there are two Folders. One is called "Public" (sharing with other users in the group) and one is called "User". In the Folder "User" there is anoother Subfolder, which is always named after the User. So if my Username is "Dracula" then this Subfolder is also named "Dracula". In the Folder "Public" as well as in the Folder "Username" the App can freely create any subfolders for uploading the Pictures. But on Root the Sever denies all trials to write.
It would probably be the best to crate the "Boxcryptor Photos" Subfolder in the "Username" Folder.
Since Ionos Hidrive is only a resale of Strato Hidrive (whitch should be suported by boxcyptor) I assume, that it works the same way there.
However, I really thought this would work easier, since the Server supports webdav fully. Well, it is not... 😉
          Thanks again,
          BinKeiner

            Hi BinKeiner,
            Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, this folder structure doesn't match our standard WebDAV configuration.
I added a custom implementation for Ionos HiDrive to our roadmap.
Please note that this may take some time.
